Before your next road trip, run through this quick checklist from Tucker Auto Care to make sure your vehicle is ready for the miles ahead.
Every good trip starts with a good map. That's the idea behind Tucker Road Map — I wanted a place where I could share the same practical, no-nonsense advice I give customers at the counter every day, whether you're headed across town or across state lines.
For our first stop, let's cover the basics: what I tell people to check before they load up the car and hit the highway. Skipping these steps is how a fun weekend trip turns into a roadside headache — and I've seen it happen more times than I can count.
1. Tires: Pressure, Tread, and Spare
Heat is hard on tires, and out here in the Imperial Valley, summer pavement temperatures can push tire pressure well above normal. Before any trip:
- Check pressure when tires are cold (before driving), and set them to the number on your driver's-side door jamb — not the number on the tire itself.
- Check tread depth. The penny test works: insert a penny with Lincoln's head down. If you can see all of his head, it's time for new tires.
- Don't forget the spare. A flat spare defeats the purpose of having one.
2. Fluids: The Five to Know
Low fluids are one of the most common (and most preventable) causes of breakdowns.
- Oil — check the level and color. Dark, gritty oil means it's overdue.
- Coolant — critical for desert driving. Low coolant plus high heat is a fast way to overheat an engine.
- Brake fluid — should be clear to light amber, not dark or cloudy.
- Power steering fluid — if your car has a separate reservoir, check it.
- Windshield washer fluid — cheap, easy, and easy to forget.
3. Battery Health
Heat degrades batteries faster than cold does, which surprises a lot of people. If your battery is more than three years old, or you've noticed slow cranking, get it tested before a long drive rather than finding out at a rest stop.
4. Brakes
Squealing, grinding, or a soft pedal are all signs your brakes need attention before — not during — a trip with hills, stop-and-go traffic, or heavy loads.
5. Lights and Wipers
A burnt-out headlight or brake light is an easy fix at home and a hassle to deal with on the road. Same with wiper blades — if they're streaking, replace them before you need them in a hurry.
